“Too many who say they want to go “deeper” are just feeding their knowledge addiction, not promoting life transformation.”

funny | superheroes when they get old by donald safratti

Posted in 193267 by heel93 on October 29, 2009

i ran across come hillarious cartoons doing some research on wonder woman tonight.  before you start asking, my little girl is going as wonder woman to school tomorrow and is supposed to bring a “book” on her character.  we have no wonder woman book.  i thought i’d find something i could print out online.  what i ran across were some hillarious cartoons done that depict superheroes in their post-golden era.  in multi-verse language, this would be the equivalent of superhero dementia-verse.  I’ll only post one for now.

victory | finally, the tar heels catch a break

Posted in 193267 by heel93 on October 29, 2009

i’ve watched as butch davis has patiently gone about rebuilding the football program at unc.  he is doing a fantastic job.  unlike basketball, a football program takes a long time to turn around and can be a slow process.  what most people fail to realize is that last year, carolina was only about 10 points from a 10 win season.  the only game where there was more than a touchdown loss was to nc state — and yes that hurt! not to mention, the basketball team has won a couple of national titles during this time.  the fact that the football program has such excitement and high expectations in this environment is an incredible testiment to coach davis.

i was at the virginia tech game last year with my son, zach.  we had to leave at half for something i had to do at church, so when i heard we had lost i was astonished.  we left very happy and fairly confident we would win.  much like last week against florida state, the heels dominated the first half. and in similar fashion against the seminoles, they just couldn’t hold on in the end.  last years team had a young defense and a very strong offense.  this year the heels have an incredible defense and a very young offense that is developing each game.

in basketball, freshmen can come in at the beginning of the season, lose some games while gaining experience and still win a national championship.  that just isn’t the case in football.  you have to build from scratch and can’t bank on the fact that you have even one game to spare.  so it should come as no surprise that a stellar freshman recruiting class for unc football has made some mistakes.  unfortunately, they cost a couple cames.  sometimes, you will see teams catch all the breaks and freshmen mistakes won’t be as noticable because the ball bounces to the win column.  however, these are the unc players that will bring carolina football back to national prominance.  with a defense that should remain solid, and an offense that will have games under their belt, coach davis will have a team that will compete (and hopefully beat) every team they play.

congrats to the heels tonight on a great win against va tech!

inspiration | #knowwhatyourmamasaid is a twitter top trend

Posted in 193267 by heel93 on October 28, 2009

i make it a point to keep an eye on what the top trends are on twitter.  most people don’t care.  most people don’t even know what twitter is.  on the other hand, millions do.  i always throw out paris hilton, the jonas brothers and brittney spears.  they are trends that are based in nothing but gossip and wanting to be like the rich and famous. however, there are always a few trends that catch my attention.  there is a passage of scripture that says this…

proverbs 22:6 | train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

what stands out to me the most is that the passage says “when he is old“.  that is comforting.  i have a good bit of time to get things right.  we all have a good bit of time to work things out.  we may stray, we may even try to run — but mama’s voice will hunt and haunt us.  that isn’t a joke.  now, you may go on twitter and see a bunch of sarcastic posts from kids in the their teens and adults in their 20s and 30s, but don’t think for a minute that their mama isn’t in their head every single day…for better or for worse.

moms and dads set the stage in the home.  but it is the mom that i think has the most profound impact.  that 9 months in the womb make a bond tighter than we can comprehend.  the attitudes, outlook, words, actions — all of these things combine to train a child whether you want them to or not.  a wise guru friend of mine, barry grecu, once said, “children are the worlds best recorders and the worlds WORST interpreters.”  so true.  barry, i might petition that one to be a proberb itself.  i pray that i don’t have to wait until i’m old to fully grasp the wisdom of my mama.  she did it right.
